Our Project - Notre projet

Our United Church congregation decided to make the Côte Church building its permanent home.  However, the current structure had no insulation, structural issues, and many barriers to access.  Our goal is to rebuild an accessible church with increased floor space, while keeping the same appearance that was there since 1903.

See the story below as we proceed.

For more information, see details.

Full wall from interiorProgress can be seen and unseen - in this photo, one sees the complete south exterior wall.  What one does not see if one is driving by is that the north wall is framed and lying on the floor, ready to be put up.  Also - "hidden" work includes verification of the stained glass windows that will be going into the east wall (towards the Cote Cemetery).

The square opening on the right is for the elevator.

Truss in construction

Just a short note - recently two of our committee members went to visit Jackson Hill Timber Frame where our roof truss are being constructed.  These truss have no nails or bolts.  They are pre-assembled in the shop, then taken apart for transportation and re-assembled in place.  These truss will be installed in early March.

First Wall Section

Following back-to-back snowstorms, the first operation was snow clearing from the floor!  But now we are happy to see the first section of wall go up!  Weather looks better for the coming week.

Subfloor installationfloor trussLast week the floor truss were installed.  These truss are only 12 inches apart!  The previous floor structure was not structurally sound, and the beams were cracked.

This photo shows the subfloor being installed.  The flooring itself will be in pine.

The next step is the construction of the exterior walls.

January 24 - Weather delays

Hi - if you have been driving past the site, you may have noticed that not much has happened..... YET.  There was an issue with supplying a material.... and then the cold.  The work that needs to be done next entails using a hammer and nails - in my own experience, hard to hold nails while wearing heavy gloves.
We are in communication with our contractor and look forward to the floor truss and sub-floor going in soon.

December 21, 2024

As we move into the winter break, we are cheered by some progress!  New sills have been added to the tops of the foundation, and some metal beams that blocked the soon-to-be installed trusses were removed.  As well, hangers were installed on the two sills, so that come January the truss can be dropped into place.  Construction resumes in the week of January 6

Floor Truss
Floor Truss

You will see in the photo that the floor truss have arrived.

The pre-existing floor was removed because it was no longer structurally sound.  The new truss will be at one-foot intervals to support the new wood floors.

Construction is planned to start on Tuesday, December 17.

December 10, 2024 Update!

Building Permit

After a LONG time of getting things together, we have a NEW building permit AND are expecting construction materials to arrive this week.  Construction is to begin next week with the installation of a new floor structure, as the old floor was unsound.

March 1 update

We have been working with the Town of St-Lazare, and we submitted our request for the February meeting of the CCU (TPAC).  Town Council meets on March 12th to consider the recommendation of the CCU.  If the response is favourable, then we would proceed to obtain a building permit in the days that follow so that re-construction can begin.
